Olympic Aerial Skiing

o   Aerialists ski off jumps that propel them up to 40-50feet in the air and perform various flips, tucks, and twists.  Their skis are usually built with wood, sometimes metal.  The take off angles of the jumps range from 60-70 degrees. 

The aerialists are judged 20% on jump takeoff, 50 % on jump form, and 30% for landing.  Then, a degree of difficulty is taken into consideration for the final score.

Rules

§  The competition area for each freestyle skiing event should be constructed in accordance with the FIS rule-book.

§   Competition areas must be inspected before the competition by the official to ensure the safety of the participants.

§  The starting and finishing areas should be properly marked on the course.

§  A number of officials are appointed during the competition to super vise the skiers' performances.

§  The participants of the freestyle skiing competition are divided in various age groups during the event.

§  The competitors are given points for their performances during the competitions. The competitor with the highest score is declared the winner of the competition.

§  The equipments used during the freestyle skiing competition have to meet the standard set by the FIS in its rule-book.

§  The competitor must announce his/her planned jump immediately before entering the starting gate.

§  If the jump that was announced is not performed, the aerialist will receive no score

§  If a competitor is disqualified, then they will be removed from the entire competition and will be ranked at the bottom of the classification with no final ranking

In case of a tie, the highest single scoring jump will determine the winner.

Equipment and Leading record holders

o   The only equipment used for this sport is twin-tip skis. 
o   The leading record holder for this event is Lydia Lassila who is from Australia.  Many famous Olympians for this sport include Donna Weinbrecht from the U.S. and Jillian Vogtli from the U.S.
 

Venue

o   This event will take place at Cypress Mountain, about 20 miles outside of the city.
